Exploring the Mythological Statue of the Trevi Fountain

The Trevi Fountain, one of Rome’s most iconic landmarks, is a masterpiece of Baroque art, blending grandeur, elegance, and symbolism. Located at the intersection of three streets, the fountain has captivated visitors for centuries with its awe-inspiring sculptures and intricate design. While the fountain itself is famous for its dramatic water displays, the sculptures adorning it are just as mesmerizing, telling stories of mythology, nature, and human ambition.

The design of the Trevi Fountain was led by architect Niccolò Salvi. It mainly focuses on the themes of the sea god and water elements. The sculptures represent the power of the ocean, blending mythological stories and symbolism.

The water pool of the Trevi Fountain is not static; it presents a scene that seems “to be happening.” The sea god Neptune rides two sea horses emerging from the water, with attendants beside him blowing horns, as if calling upon the power of the ocean. This composition perfectly reflects the Baroque art style’s pursuit of dynamic and dramatic aesthetics.

The Central Figure: Oceanus

At the heart of the Trevi Fountain stands the towering figure of Oceanus, the Greek Titan of the sea. Unlike Neptune, the Roman god of the sea, often depicted with a trident and dolphins, Oceanus is shown on a chariot pulled by two sea horses.

Two Tritons Blowing Horns

Triton is the sea god in ancient Greek mythology and the attendant of Poseidon. The two Tritons are blowing the conch horn (buccina), symbolizing the call of the sea and the manifestation of divinity. In ancient mythology, blowing the conch can arouse wind and waves or calm the ocean, so the existence of these two Tritons strengthens Neptune’s identity as the “master of the sea.”

Two Hippocamps

The hippocamp (also known as the “water horse” or “sea horse”) is the mythological steed of the sea god, with the front half of a horse and the back half of a fish tail.

Left Hippocamp raises its head and charges forward, showing its restless, wild nature. It symbolizes the powerful, untamable force of the ocean. Its mouth is open, its muscles tense, as it tries to break through the surface of the water.

Right Hippocamp moves gently, with its head slightly lowered. This represents the peaceful and controllable side of the ocean. The contrast between the two seahorses expresses the dual nature of nature itself — it can be nurturing and gentle, but also overwhelming and destructive.

Shell Chariot (Neptune’s Chariot)

Neptune stands in a large shell-shaped chariot, which is the traditional seat of ancient sea gods. The shell symbolizes the abundance and mystery of the ocean and also represents “birth” (for example, Venus was born from a shell). It adds a sacred quality to the overall composition.

Rocks and Water Flow

The faux rock formation at the base of the fountain is not randomly stacked but carefully arranged to create a “natural stage.” Water rushes down through the gaps in the rocks, creating a waterfall effect. Together with the sculptures in the pool, it forms a “mythological theater” feel, making the viewer feel as if they are witnessing the climax of a myth.

Abundance and Health Goddess Statue

Flanking Oceanus are two allegorical statues representing Abundance and Health, both created by Filippo della Valle.

Abundance is depicted holding a basket overflowing with fruit, with a jug spilling water at her feet, symbolizing the richness and fertility brought by the fountain’s water.

Health, on the other hand, holds a cup from which a snake drinks, a nod to the purity and life-sustaining quality of the water sourced from the ancient Aqua Virgo aqueduct.

The Ace of Cups

One of the more intriguing details of the fountain is the large vase referred to as the “Ace of Cups.” Positioned on the right side of the fountain, this vase was added by the fountain’s original architect, Nicola Salvi, as a practical yet cheeky solution. Legend has it that Salvi placed it there to block the view of a troublesome barber’s shop, ensuring his masterpiece wouldn’t be overshadowed by the barber’s signage.

The Fertility Figures

Above the fountain, four additional statues celebrate the bounty of nature. These figures represent the Abundance of Fruit, Fertility of Crops, Products of Autumn, and the Joy of Gardens. Each figure holds an item that reflects its theme—whether it’s a horn of plenty, a basket of flowers, or a cluster of grapes. These sculptures blend seamlessly into the fountain’s broader narrative of abundance and harmony with nature.

The Papal Coat of Arms

Crowning the fountain is the coat of arms of Pope Clement XII, who commissioned the fountain’s construction. This emblem serves as a testament to the power and influence of the papacy during the Baroque period, as well as the pope’s vision in supporting grand architectural projects.
